Stavoren, oldest of all Frisian cities, used to be a city of trade.
In the early days there was an intensive trade through the Ostsee and the river Rhine; in 1385 Stavoren became part of the German Hansa. Stavoren's past has been one with setbacks, such as the vanishing of hte herring-fishery, and large fires.
The silting up of the port is told of in the legend of the lady of Stavoren; you'll find her statue by the old lock.

Stavoren is now mainly known as a city of watersports; it is one of the busiest passages for yachts between the
IJsselmeer and the Frian lakes.
With its harbours, campsites, restaurants and pubs, Stavoren is a nice town to stay for a while.
